09.04.16 Worship Confessional

imagesWork is part of God’s loving plan, we are called to cultivate and care for all the goods of creation and in this way share in the work of creation! Work is fundamental to the dignity of a person. Work, to use a metaphor, “anoints” us with dignity, fills us with dignity, makes us similar to God, who has worked and still works… (Pope Francis)

What is the Christian understanding of work?…It is that work is not, primarily a thing one does to live, but the thing one lives to do. It is, or should be, the full expression of the worker’s faculties…the medium in which one offers oneself to God. (Dorothy Sayers)

If it falls to your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep the streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, like Shakespeare wrote poetry, like Beethoven composed music; sweep streets so well that all the host of heaven and earth will pause to say, “Here lives a great street sweeper; who swept their job well.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Here are three questions you might want to consider on this Labor Day:

  1. What energizes you about your work?
  2. Where do you experience the “toil” of work?
  3. In what ways does your work in the world connect with God’s work in the world?
