Somehow we’ve come to believe
that greatness is reserved
for the chosen few, for the superstar.
The truth is greatness is for all of us.
This is not about lowering expectations.
It is about raising it for every last one of us.
Because greatness is not in one special place and it is not in one special person.
Greatness is whereever somebody is trying to find it. (Nike Campaign for 2012 Olympic Games)
Jesus taught that the pathway to greatness is through serving and yesterday in worship we invited our community of faith to pursue greatness through our Summer Serve Project. After a short time of teaching, we created space in worship for people to get out of their seats and commit to at least one specific action of serving this summer. It was pretty cool to see the bulk of our community respond.
How about you? Are you committed you a lifestyle of greatness? Martin Luther King Jr said, “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.”
May this prayer guide you as you accept God’s invitation to serve in the places we live, learn, work and play:
Holy God, we thank You for sending Jesus into the world to show us what true greatness is all about. Help us to pursue greatness by following Jesus in the path of service. Fueled by your Spirit and motivated by our love for You and our neighbors, help us serve with glad hearts, joining in the redemptive work of making all things as they should be. For the sake and glory of Jesus Christ; Amen.
