11.10.13 Worship Confessional

Slide1Vulnerability is not weakness, and the uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure we face every day are not optional. Our only choice is a question of engagement. Our willingness to own and engage with our vulnerability determines the depth of our courage and the clarity of our purpose; the level to which we protect ourselves from being vulnerable is a measure of our fear and disconnection. When we spend our lives waiting until we’re perfect or bulletproof before we walk into the arena, we ultimately sacrifice relationships and opportunities that may not be recoverable, we squander our precious time, and we turn our backs on our gifts, those unique contributions that only we can make. Perfect and bulletproof are seductive, but they don’t exist in the human experience. We must walk into the arena, whatever it may be – a new relationship, an important meeting, the creative process, or a difficult family conversation – with courage and the willingness to engage. Rather than sitting on the sidelines and hurling judgment and advice, we must dare to show up and let ourselves be seen. This is vulnerability. This is daring greatly. (Brene Brown)

This morning as we continued our series, Rock Solid: Lessons from the Life of Peter, we considered the idea of holy risk taking. In our text from Matthew 14, Jesus invited Peter to step out of the boat and come to him on the water. While it was a risk, it wasn’t  foolishness because Jesus invited him to do that which on his own, Peter could never do.

How about you? What would it look like for you to become a holy risk taker? Here are three questions to consider:

  • What is your boat (your place of comfort)
  • What is your water? (the call to move closer to Jesus)
  • What is your wind? (the source of fear or anxiety)

Here is our complete worship flow:

  • Our God Is Mercy (Brenton Brown)
  • We Glorify Your Name (Hillsong/Passion)
  • Rock of Ages (Paul Baloche)
  • A Psalm of Thanksgiving (Psalm 103)
  • 10,000 Reasons (Matt Redman)
  • An Update on our Children and Youth Ministries
  • Announcements and Offering
  • Message (Holy Risk Taking)
  • Benediction (Matt Redman)

Please check out my Indiegogo project, A Movable Feast: Worship for the Other Six Days. This book is designed to help the people of God live out the call to worship Monday – Saturday. This book has been percolating within me for quite some time now and with your help the dream can become a reality.
