As we near the end of our study of the book of Ruth, this week we explored the episode at the city gate Ruth 4:1-12). Here is what Carolyn Custis James writes about Boaz and Ruth’s conspiracy and the risky course of action they took together:
When Ruth and Boaz launched their small-scale rescue operation, they had no idea that they were reconnecting with God’s original vision for his creation. Nor did they ever realize that their local rescue effort was actually crucial to God’s global rescue operation to save the lost and self-destructing planet that he loves. In Bethlehem, God’s image bearers — Ruth and Boaz — were ruling and subduing the small portion of earth God entrusted to their stewardship. But even bigger things were happening, for they were rescuing the royal line of the Messiah. The miracle child they both risk everything to conceive becomes the grandfather of King David, the forefather of King Jesus. And through their efforts God is even reactivating Naomi to assume a major role in God’s redemptive purposes for the world. (The Gospel According to Ruth, 187)
