06.16.13 Worship Confessional

book-of-ruthContrary to the ancient culture’s tendency to discard barren women as useless members of society, God refuses to drop them from his script.  Instead of banishing them to the margins of his story, he resolutely moves them to the forefront and recruits them for pivotal roles in the history of redemption.  The book of Ruth is a prime example.  Here, two childless widows become the lead figures in a biblical book.  As often happens in the Bible, the storyline narrows from a wider national tapestry to a slender thread where one woman’s choices, initiatives, and leadership have global repercussions and work good for all of us.  Both Ruth and Naomi’s actions rise from the mundane, the ordinary, and the marginal to what is rightly deemed to be earthshaking and central.
