10.28.12 Worship Confessional

Yesterday we concluded our series called “Offering.” My working definition of worship is “offering our lives back to God for the life of the world” and yesterday we focused our attention on the last dimension of that description, “for the life of the world.” Jesus, our worship leader, set the pace for His people, by offering up His life for the sake of the world. Jesus said in John 6 that He was “the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33) and that “this bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:51).

The Apostle Paul spoke of the people of God being the aroma of Christ in the word. He wrote in 2 Corinthians 2:

“But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?” (2 Corinthians 2:14-16)

I like what Bob Goff said about this text: “I’ve decided that being the aroma of Christ isn’t much like perfume at all; it’s more like a scratch and sniff, and we are the ones that get scratched.”

Take a few moments to reflect upon these questions:

  1. What does it mean to be in the world, but not of the world, for the sake of the world?
  2. How does your life bring flourishing to your world?

We closed our gathering with a powerful new song from Bethel Live called, “For the Sake of the World.” The chorus declares:

For the sake of the world
Burn like a fire in me
Light a flame in my soul
For every eye to see
For the sake of the world
Light a fire in me.
