9.23.12 Worship Confessional

Yesterday we continued our series “Echoes of a Voice” by exploring the issue of justice. We were privileged to have Stephanie Summers, CEO of the Center for Public Justice as our guest speaker. Stephanie shared a substantive message, “Thinking as Christians in an Election Year: The Pursuit of Justice in Politics” and I would encourage you to take some time to learn from her.

As I was thinking about our gathering, I was drawn to the reality that our God is a passionate God – passionate about justice which ultimately flows from God’s passionate love for the world that God created. In the midst of my reflections, I was reintroduced by the North Point project No One Higher to a song by Jeremy Riddle called “Furious.”  This song speaks of the passionate love that God has for God’s people.  The chorus declares:

His love is deep, His love is wide
And it covers us
His love is fierce, His love is strong
It’s furious
His love is sweet, His love is wild
And it’s waking hearts to life.

Perhaps no one understates the furious love of God more than Brennan Manning. We introduced the song with this video that captured the heart of Manning’s experience with the love of God.

As well, as we reprised the song at the end of our gathering, we framed it with these words taken from Manning’s book, The Furious Longing of God:

“The gospel is absurd and the life of Jesus is meaningless unless we believe that He lived, died, and rose again with but one purpose in mind: to make brand-new creation. Not to make people with better morals but to create a community of prophets and professional lovers, men and women who would surrender to the mystery of the fire of the Spirit that burns within, who would live in ever greater fidelity to the omnipresent Word of God, who would enter into the center of it all, the very heart and mystery of Christ, into the center of the flame that consumes, purifies, and sets everything aglow with peace, joy, boldness, and extravagant, furious love. This, my friend, is what it really means to be a Christian.”
