Rooted in the Word: An Opportunity to Equip and Empower East African Church Leaders

During the month of July, I will have the opportunity to travel to East Africa to serve as a member of the faculty for two of the “Rooted in God’s Word Conferences.” The conferences, sponsored by the Pastors Discipleship Network (PDN) will be held in the capital city of Kampala and the Nebbi District in Northern Uganda and will reach 600-800 East African pastors each of whom is currently providing local church leadership. The majority of East African pastors (up to 80%) are leading their churches without the benefit of any formal biblical or theological training and the mission of PDN is to equip and empower local church pastors with basic study tools for accurately interpreting God’s Word. This opportunity connects deeply to my passion to encourage, equip and empower local church leaders, near and far and everywhere in-between. During the conferences, I will be giving keynote lectures on the topics of Servant Leadership, Preaching the Whole Gospel, Christ-centered Preaching, Dwelling in the Word, and Preaching That Connects. along with providing small group leadership and one on one coaching to conference participants.

During my visit to Uganda I will be spending time with Pastor Luke Jaymin Muwayi and his congregation, the Nakawa Pentecostal Church (NPC). Pastor Luke and I have been in a mentoring relationship (through PDN) for the two years and this relationship has been a rich, rewarding leadership challenge. Since my visit last year, our communities of faith have engaged in a partnership in the form of helping NPC establish a SACCO (Savings and Community Credit Organization) which has provided micro loans to small business owners and the opportunity for members of this poverty stricken community to establish a secure savings account. As well, a number of our people have been connecting with members of NPC in our leader-to-leader initiative. I look forward to spending time with Pastor Luke and his people and we are filled with a great sense of anticipation for the face-to-face opportunity to deepen the partnership between our communities of faith.  As well, I will be visiting the Kasangati Child Development Centre (Compassion International Project) spending time encouraging the staff and connecting with our sponsored children.
