5.20.12 Worship Confessional

This morning we concluded our five week series, “Rejoicing Our World.” I had a blast shaping worship around the glorious vision found in Proverbs 11:10: “When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices.”

Let me highlight three elements of our worship gathering this morning: a new song, a video and a benediction. As you know I love bringing new music to our community of faith and this morning we introduced a song from Ben Cantelon called “Love Came Down.” Ben is Brit who is connected to Soul Survivor and Worship Central and his latest project, “Everything in Color” is my favorite worship release of the year (so far). “Love Came Down” is a highly singable, passionate anthem that gives a voice to the people of God to declare:

I’ve found a love greater than life itself
I found a hope stronger and nothing compare
I once was lost, now I’m alive in you

You can learn the backstory of the song and watch an acoustic performance at Worship Together’s New Song Cafe.

During my message, I talked about having a larger understanding of the Gospel and used a three minute video from James Choung in which he outlines the whole story of the Gospel by using four circles. Choung national director of InterVarsity Asian American Ministries is the author of True Story: A Christianity Worth Believing In and its companion booklet, Based on a True Story (both InterVarsity Press, 2008), which both illustrate how to present Jesus’ central message in a way that makes sense to people today. Great stuff!

Lastly, we closed the series with this version of a Franciscan Benediction – may the words both disorient and reorient you toward God’s purposes in the world today!

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart. May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace. May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain in to joy. And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done. Amen.
