Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday?

If you follow the lectionary readings for this Sunday, the liturgical calendar presented worship planners with two options: the Liturgy of the Palms or the Liturgy of the Passion.

Whenever possible I prefer to take a both/and approach and the theme for our gathering was “Palms and Passion.” I love the way Richard Fairchild captures the both/and in this statement:

“Practically everyone has known the taste of Palm Sunday, the sweetness of success and popularity, and nearly all of us have tasted the bitterness of Good Friday, of failure and rejection. What saves us from an endless round of ups and downs, what frees us from the tyranny of events over which we have no control is our commitment to press forward in obedience to God. It is trust in God’s love to bring about Easter morning, knowing that the meaning of life is to be found in the knowledge and love of God, and in sharing that knowledge and love with those who accompany us on the way.”

Question: Palms or passion? What was the focal point of your worship gathering this weekend? Or did you find a way to connect the two?

This morning we introduced the new song from Passion’s White Flag project called, “Jesus, Son of God. This was a beautiful closing song for our gathering as it connected the praise of Palm Sunday and the passion of the Cross.

You came down, from heaven’s throne
This earth You formed, was not Your home
A love like this, the world had never known
A crown of thorns, to mock your name
Forgiveness fell upon Your face
A love like this, the world had never known

You took our sin, You bore our shame
You rose to life, You defeated the grave
A love like this, the world has never known

On the altar of our praise
Let there be no higher name: Jesus Son of God
You laid down Your perfect life
You are the sacrifice: Jesus Son of God
You are Jesus Son of God

You can learn the story behind the song and watch an acoustic version of the song at Worship Together’s New Song Cafe.
