10.9.11 Worship Confessional

We continued our One.Life series this morning and we were pleased to have Derek Melleby with us as our guest speaker. Derek is the director of the College Transition Initiative which is part of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding and the author of two outstanding books: Make College Count and The Outrageous Idea of Academic Faithfulness.

Derek’s theme this morning was a Storied.Life (you can listen to his message here) and he framed his message on the power of a storied life with these two quotes:

“I can only answer the question: what am I to do? if I answer the prior question: of what story do I find myself a part?” – Alisdair MacIntyre

“The way we understand human life depends on what conception we have of the human story. What is the real story of which my life story is part?” – Lesslie Newbigin

Musically, this morning we took a simple approach with two acoustic guitars, bass and vocals. My favorite song was “Your Love Is a Song,” from Switchfoot’s Hello Hurricane project. You might not think of it as a “worship song” but consider the lyrics and allow them to draw you closer to the overwhelming love of God:

I hear you breathing in
Another day begins
The stars are falling out
My dreams are fading now, fading out
I’ve been keeping my eyes wide open
I’ve been keeping my eyes wide open

The dawn is fire bright
Against the city lights
The clouds are glowing now
The moon is blacking out, is blacking out

Ooh, your love is a symphony
All around me, running through me
Ooh, your love is a melody
Underneath me, running to me
Oh, your love is a song

Our complete worship flow was as follows:

  • Song of Hope (Robbie Seay Band)
  • Responsive reading from Psalm 89
  • Came to My Rescue (Hillsong)
