9.4.11 Worship Confessional

Have you ever noticed how many times the word “today” is found in Scripture?

Our community of faith is in the midst of a three week series called “Tense.” As we begin the new ministry year, we are taking time to reflect upon the past, present and future tense of our life together as God’s people.  Last week we reflected upon the past, and as we considered the work of God in, with and through us, we took time to remember and give thanks. Yesterday during our worship gathering we focused on the present and I encouraged our community that our proper posture ought to be one of awareness and engagement.

Some of us have a tendency to get struck in the past while others are constantly looking forward to what might be. But God is doing something today  in the “now” of our lives.  And you really don’t want to miss it.

“The LORD has done it this very day;
let us rejoice today and be glad.”  (Psalm 118:24)

I appreciate what Ruth Haley Barton says about awareness and engagement:

Awareness always calls us to take responsibility for responding to what we are seeing – which is another reason that many of us seek to avoid awareness for as long as we can. But when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing, we are ripe for making a move.

Question: what’s is your awareness level of God’s activity in your life? How willing are you to engage and join in with the work that God is doing?

As we focused on the present tense and growing in both our awareness and engagement, we wanted to remind people of God’s ability to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all we can ask or even imagine. To do so, we introduced a new song to our community, “God is Able” the title track from Hillsong’s latest project (check out the Worship Together New Song Cafe episode) . We framed this song with a number of “God Is Able” Scriptures and then launched into this potent reminder of God’s power, capacity and ability to do all things!

God is able
He will never fail
He is Almighty God
Greater than all we seek
Greater than all we ask
He has done great things

God is with us
God is on our side
He will make a way
Far above all we know
Far above all we hope
He has done great things

Lifted up He defeated the grave
Raised to life our God is able
In His Name we overcome
For the Lord our God is able

  1. Loved the set. Will have to check out the Hillsong number. They create so many songs that it’s hard to keep up with them. I love everything that Reuben Morgan writes and if I hear a Hillsong song and like it, 9 times out of 10 Reuben wrote it.

    Have a great week
