New Music Tuesday – Stephen Curtis Chapman’s Re:creation

Five time Grammy winner, Stephen Curtis Chapman is one of the giants in the Christian music industry. He is a both masterful songwriter and skillful guitarist (he is a Taylor guy). Despite his success in the music business, he is no stranger to suffering, pain and sorrow for in 2008 his daughter Maria was tragically killed in an family accident. His daughter’s death reframed his perspective on life and faith and also challenged him to look at his music with a renewed purpose.

Chapman said this about the project:

“I found that since Maria went to heaven, many of the songs that I have written over the years continue to grow in meaning. The heart behind doing this was asking, how can I take some of those songs that have a new depth to me and reinterpret those, recreate those? Thus the title re:creation.”

As I have been listening to re:creation this morning, my heart has been touched afresh by SCC’s heart for God and passion. HIs song “Magnificent Obsession” says it all:

This is everything I want
This is everything I need
I want this to be my one consuming passion
Everything my heart desires
Lord, I want it all to be for You, Jesus
Be my magnificent obsession
