8.7.11 Worship Confessional

“Plumbers who give great evangelistic talks but let the water leak are not doing their job. They are bad plumbers. It becomes clear that they do not love their neighbor. The meaning of the job is in the love for God and neighbor. Each person should pray in his or her own way, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, and then work toward that in his or her specific job.” (Hans Rookmaaker)

These words from the essay “Art Has No Justification” helped frame our second worship gathering built around the theme, “Our Work Matters to God.” As human beings created in the image of God, we are called to be culture makers and cultivators of God’s good creation.

How does your work contribute toward the common good and/or the building for God’s kingdom?

Musically speaking – we introduced two new songs to our community this morning – one is a new song and one a older song that was new to us. The new, new song was “O This God” by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin from Matt’s recent project 10,000 Reasons. I love this project and there are most likely 5 or 6 songs that we will eventually include in one of our gatherings. “O This God” is a strong opener as it invites the people of God to declare their allegiance to the One who is most worthy of all out praise.

O this God is our God even ‘til the end
Standing strong over us time and time again
Even ‘til the end…
Jesus, You will always be our God
We won’t take our eyes off You
Jesus. You’ll forever be the One
We’ll have no other God but You

We also included Michael Gungor’s “Beautiful Things.” Gungor is one of my favorite bands and I have been looking for the right place to finally bring this powerful song to our community’s worship. We did a fusion between the version on the studio project “Beautiful Things”and a sweet live performance they did in the Relevant Studios. We used acoustic guitar (love drop D tuning), bass, drums and xylophone (first time for us).

Question: What out of the ordinary instruments have you used in your worship gatherings?

Here’s our complete worship flow:

  • O This God (Matt Redman & Jonas Myrin)
  • Call to Worship from Exodus 20:1-7
  • Here For You (Matt Redman & Matt Maher)
  • Salvation Is Here (Hillsong)
  • 10,000 Reasons (Matt Redman & Jonas Myrin)
  • Announcements and Offering
  • Beautiful Things (Gungor)
  • Message: Work (2)
  • Reprise of Beautiful Things

  1. Terry, Great to see you all doing Beautiful Things. Just heard that song in Haiti for the first time and moved me to tears. Planning on doing that here.
